New Jet Innovations That Support Our Carbon Missions

As part of our carbon emission aims, SHY Aviation has many new jet innovations on our radar. Recently there have been two huge breakthroughs to celebrate in the industry, coming from Lilium and VoltAero. So, let’s take a look at these updates.

Commencement of Lilium jet fuselage assembly

The Lilium jet project is currently underway and aims to create a “sustainable and accessible mode of high-speed, regional transportation for people and goods”. It’s an all-electric vertical take-off and landing jet, with zero emissions and commencement of the aircraft’s fuselage has begun. 

So what does this mean? Well, it could mean that towards the end of 2024, we could see the first manned flight of this sustainable jet. This would be an incredible success for the aviation industry, and it’s certainly something we would offer to clients for their flights.

Lilium plans to create seven aircraft, but must first create seven fuselages and attain type-certification of the Lilium Jet. It’s great to see the commitment to providing efficient, enjoyable, and sustainable jet travel and we can’t wait to be a part of it. This first fuselage is to be delivered to Lilium’s facilities in the fourth quarter of 2023, with the aim of beginning assembly by the end of the year.

VoltAero’s 100% sustainable electric-hybrid flight with TotalEnergies fuel

This is a major update in the race for sustainable jet flying. VoltAero has completed the world’s first flight of an electric-hybrid aircraft with 100% sustainable fuel. How have they done this? What does it mean? Well, we’re another step closer to using biofuel in aviation. Every milestone is something to be celebrated.

The flight was fueled by TotalEnergies’ Excellium Racing 100, which is made from bioethanol, produced by waste in the French vineyards. 

VoltAero’s CEO and Chief Technology Officer said: “Based on initial results, we calculated a truly impressive CO2 reduction of approximately 80 percent while operating the Cassio powertrain in its electric-hybrid mode and with the internal combustion engine fueled by TotalEnergies’ Excellium Racing 100”.
